Francesco Fontebasso, a Venetian painter, pupil of Sebastiano Ricci and contemporary of Giambattista Tiepolo, is one of the finest painter-draftsmen of the Venetian tradition. After working on various palaces in Venice, Padua, and Treviso, he was invited to Saint Petersburg in 1761 to decorate the Winter Palace.

Known especially for his historical, biblical and mythological subjects, the artist produced very few 'genre paintings', which has sometimes led to their being confused with the works of Piazzetta or Tiepolo (in fact this particular pair was for some time attributed to the latter). With their sharply focused composition, freshness and generously applied brushstrokes, these works of great rarity have in common their warm vivid colours and an extraordinary sens of poetry. The expert on this artist's work, Marina Magrini, included them in her book (Francesco Fontebasso (1707-1769), Vicenza, 1988) in which she dated them to before his departure for Saint Petersburg in the 1750s.

The subjet of this pair of pictures remains a relative mystery; perhaps they were intended to be incorporated into a series of canvases with children as their theme. They are in the same format as a series of four pictures of children playing in landscapes (Children playing with a tambourine; Children playing with a dove; Children playing with a fan; Children playing with a mirror) sold at Christie's Rome on 2 December 1982, Lots 173 and 175, attributed to Domenico and Francesco Maggiotto (cf. M. Magrini, op. cit., cat. 113, 136, 208).

Francesco Fontebasso, peintre vénitien élève de Sebastiano Ricci, contemporain de Giambattista Tiepolo, s'inscrit dans la lignée des grands peintres-décorateurs de Venise. Après avoir travaillé dans différents palais de Venise, Padoue et Trévise, il fut convié en 1761 à Saint-Petersbourg pour décorer le Palais d'hiver.

Surtout réputé pour ses sujets historiques, bibliques ou mythologiques, l'artiste ne réalisa que quelques peintures de 'genre' ce qui leur valut parfois d'être confondues avec des oeuvres de Piazzetta ou de Tiepolo (la présente paire fut d'ailleurs attribuée longtemps à ce maître). D'un cadrage serré, d'une grande fraîcheur et brossées avec une touche généreuse, ces oeuvres rares ont en commun un coloris chaud et brillant et une extraordinaire poésie. La spécialiste de l'artiste, Marina Magrini, les a recensées dans son ouvrage et a proposé de les dater avant le départ pour Saint-Petersbourg dans les années 1750.

Le sujet de cette paire de tableaux demeure relativement mystérieux ; mais peut-être ceux-ci s'intégraient-ils dans une suite de toiles sur le thème des enfants. Ils sont du même format qu'une série de quatre tableaux représentant des jeux d'enfants sur fond de paysage (Enfants jouant avec un tambourin, Enfants jouant avec une colombe, Enfants jouant avec un évantail et Enfants jouant avec un miroir) passés en vente chez Christie's Rome, le 2 décembre 1982, lots 173 et 175, sous l'attribution à Domenico et Francesco Maggiotto (cf. M. Magrini, op. cit., cat. 113, 136, 208).
