MAKER'S MARK OF ABRAHAM II WARNBERGER, AUGSBURG, 1691-1695
On oval crimped base, the bulbous body repoussé and chased, with winged putti heads on large scrolling foliage, the stem formed as a figure of Mars holding a jousting lance, the bulbous body similarly chased to the foot, the cover with large leaves, putto finial and auricular scroll handle, marked on border, cover and scrolling handle, assay scrape beneath and engraved with inventory numbers and weights No 1 Tp:D:W: 10cp: 38.30w No 21

The Mars stem is similar to the one used by Hans Jakob I Baur for a cup (see L. Seelig, Silber und Gold, Augsburger Goldschmiedekunst für die Höfe Europas, Munich, 1994, fig. 38) which is indicative both of the using of common design sources as well as of the personal links that existed between goldsmiths. Abraham Warnberger married Barbara Bessmann, daughter of the goldsmith David Bessmann who worked closely with Hans Jakob Baur.
Cups and ewers in this size were often made as suitably imposing ambassadorial gifts to be displayed on buffets to demonstrate the power, authority and wealth of its owner.

Lot Essay

La figure de Mars utilisée pour le fût est la même que celle utilisée par Hans Jakob I Baur pour sa coupe illustrée dans L. Seelig, Silber und Gold, Augsburger Goldschmiedekunst für die Höfe Europas, Munich, 1994, illustr. 38, attestant de l'utilisation de mêmes sources iconographiques ainsi que des relations professionnelles et familiales qui unissaient les orfèvres. Ainsi Abraham Warnberger épouse Barbara Bessmann, la fille de l'orfèvre David qui lui-même travaille étroitement avec Hans Jakob Baur.
Ces coupes étaient souvent des présents offerts aux ambassadeurs prévus pour être disposés sur le buffet afin d'affirmer son pouvoir, son autorité et sa richesse.
