Lot Essay

This unusual lozenge format tended to be primarily used for heraldic paintings - see for example the panel attributed to Pieter Pourbus of The Circumcision, designed for the Rhetoricians of Leffinge near Ostend and now in the Royal Collection (see L. Campbell, Earlier Flemish Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, Cambridge, 1985, pp.109-111, no. 70, pl. 84).
