On completing his sessions with Monroe, Stern made prints for Vogue from his black & white negatives. He explains: 'I had finished about thirty prints that I liked well enough to show. There were a lot of different grades. Some were perfectly good prints after only two or three hours work, but I still stamped them ROUGH, because I wanted Vogue to know I would go back and make them even better. Others had really been worked on for days, especially the backlight shots. I put them all in a big envelope with all the contact sheets and went up to see Alex [Liberman] again.' (Stern, The Complete Last Sitting, Schirmer Art Books, 1992, p. 27)
