Lot Essay

The Hitchens family moved to the peace and tranquility of West Sussex in the early 1940s to escape the wartime bombing raids on London, and made their home at Greenleaves. They discovered Iping, a few miles away on the other side of Midhurst, and stayed for a couple of weeks at a guest-house where the present view was painted. A further view painted from Iping, Balcony View, Iping Church, painted in 1943 is in the collection of the Courtauld Institute, London.
