Lot Essay

While Wells was studying as a medical student he also took evening classes at St Martin's School of Art (1927-8) and during a trip to Cornwall in 1928 he met Christopher Wood, Ben and Winifred Nicholson. He worked as the GP for the Scilly Isles (1936-45) and during the war made boat trips to the mainland where he would meet with Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo, whose influence on Wells can be seen in the present work.
