Illustrant un homme et une femme égorgeant un cochon, accompagnés de deux personnages portant des gerbes de blé, et le symbole du Sagittaire, inscription en lettres dorées 'NOVEBRE' à droite, le marli décoré de masques de grotesques, grappes de fruits et entrelacs; le revers orné de quatre masques grotesques et d'entrelacs; signé des initiales 'I.C.', le marli décoré d'une frise de feuilles de laurier tressées dorées; usure à la dorure, légères restaurations

A CIRCULAR PARCEL-GILT GRISAILLE ENAMEL PLATE REPRESENTING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER
ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN COURT DIT VIGIER, SECOND HALF 16TH CENTURY
Depicting a man and woman slaughtering a boar, with two attendant figures carrying wheat sheaves, with the symbol of Sagittarius above, inscribed in gilt lettering '.NOVEBRE' to the right side, with an outer border of grotesque masks, bunches of fruits and strapwork; the reverse with four grotesque masks and strapwork, and signed with the initials '.I.C.', with gilt stiff-leaf border; wear to gilding, minor restorations

The Twelve Months were a favourite theme of Limoges enamellers in the 16th century as they could be produced in commercially appealing decorative series. Each month normally included an activity associated with the month and a representation of the corresponding zodiac sign. They were produced by many of the largest enamelling workshops.

The present plate is extremely close in painting style and composition to two plates in the Louvre representing May and June, attributed by Baratte to Jean Court dit Vigier (Baratte, loc. cit.)

Lot Essay

Les Douze Mois était l'un des thèmes de prédilection des émailleurs de Limoges au XVIème siècle, ceux ci étant écutés afin d'être insérés dans des séries décoratives jouissant d'une grande popularité.
A chaque mois correspondait généralement une activité et la représentation du signe du Zodiaque associé a celle-ci.
Ces modèles étaient exécutés par un grand nombre d'ateliers d'émailleurs.
L'assiette ici offerte est extrêmement proche - tant au niveau du style de peinture utilisé que de celui de la composition - de deux assiettes conserveés au Musée du Louvre, qui représentent les mois de mai et de juin, attribués par Baratte à Jean Court dit Vigier (Baratte, loc. cit.).
