Lot Essay
"When I had the occasion to discover the pink marble of Portugal, I could share in the opportunity: as I did not want to paint the marble, I found different colours in the material itself. I could play around with the choice of block, then, within the block, I could decide to leave or remove a more or less strongly coloured part. It gave me all sorts of colour options, unlike white marble, which looks more severe because there is no colour to help it. Whenever I choose pink Portugal marble, for example, I have an advantage because the colour is intrinsic to it" (Atchugarry interview with Valeria Campagni, 2006, reproduced in, A Journey Between Matter and Light: Pablo Atchugarry, Oostkamp 2006, p. 55).
