Lot Essay

From 1929 to 1930, Rouault worked on a film project, for which he executed around one hundred gouaches. 'Qui donc se connaît? Bon messieurs critiques' belongs to the series Popular images, qui donc se connaît?, which represents various characters or 'types'. The present work depicts critics. Ultimately, however, the film was not produced, and the gouaches were exhibited and sold separately.
