Lot Essay
With copy of the Omega Extract of Records dated 5 May 2008 confirming production of the present watch "with special thick mat black dial, with luminous hour markers and luminous hands (radium), Specially designed for scientists, technicians, electricians, etc... working within close distance of powerful electric currents" in 1958 and its subsequent delivery to the Swiss market. Furthermore accompanied by a brochure on the history of the Omega Railmaster model.
The present watch is a fine example of the early "Railmaster" model, featuring the blank case back as opposed to the later versions with engraved seahorse logo and inscription. Preserved in very good, original condition, it stands out by the beautifully aged dial and is still retaining the original bracelet dated 1.59.
The Omega "Railmaster" ref. CK 2914 was launched in 1957 and designed for professionals working near magnetic fields. The designation "Railmaster" was chosen to reflect Omega's longstanding relationship with the railways. The high degree of precision achieved by Omega's watches led to them being the brand of choice of many of the world's railroad companies.
The movement of the "Railmaster" is encased in a mu-metal cage protecting the movement to 1000 Gauss. Following IWC's "Ingenieur" wristwatch, the "Railmaster" was the second wristwatch to achieve a level of resistance up to such a high level.
In production during a short period of time only, the Omega "Railmaster" enjoys today enormous popularity amongst collectors.
