The present reference 6205 stands out by its highly unusual dial, featuring a small white line underneath the designation "Submariner".
Early versions, such as this watch, were fitted with the sophisticated and today very popular black gloss dial. These black dials must be regarded as the ultimate state of the art in dial manufacturing as revealing a rich complexity of different layers applied to the metal base. In fact, the gilt writing and minute markings are not printed on the black lacquered background but underneath and shine through in negative relief. However to further enhance its sophistication, the white underline is superimposed and printed onto the black background.
The present watch, preserved in excellent, original overall condition and fitted with the highly rare and attractive black lacquer "underline" dial with gilt writing, is one of the most beautiful and charismatic references 6205 a collector could ask for.
Reference 6205
One of the rarest and most sought after Submariner models ever produced, reference 6205 was exclusively available in 1954 and 1955 and only very few examples were made.
Reference 6205 was presumably Rolex's third diver's watch, featuring many new enhancements compared to its predecessor reference 6204, most notably the increased depth resistance of 100 meters and the larger crown (6 mm.) for better handling, dial with gilt printing but without the depth rating and only some models featured the designation "Submariner". The bezels were without minute divisions and a silver triangle.
