Lot Essay

During the early 1950's, Rolex launched reference 6062, considered by many collectors as the ultimate Rolex wristwatch. In fact, together with reference 8171 (see lot 52 in this auction), it is one of only two models to show the date, the weekday, the month and the phases of the moon. It was also the first Rolex model ever to be fitted with the so-called Super-Oyster Crown.

Reference 6062 is the pinnacle for the savvy Rolex connoisseur since it combines all key elements a demanding watch collector could expect: a sporty yet distinguished look, a complicated movement with full calendar and moon phases indication housed in the purist of all Oyster designs.

Examples in stainless steel are not only highly exclusive but are particularly rare to have survived in such clean, original yet charismatic condition. In fact, without exaggeration, one must consider the present 6062 to be one of the best stainless steel examples known to exist. Its true 1950s appeal, enhanced by the astounding two-tone dial, round up the overall appearance.

Few watches ever made by any manufacturer exemplify in a better manner the key ingredients of a collector's trophy: rarity, looks, condition and, for the distinguished gentleman collector, enjoyable wearability.
