Marianne Farenholtz (1896-1990) was married to Wilhelm Farenholtz, a well known commodity trader from Magdeburg, Germany. The couple were eclectic in their artistic interests; as well as collecting modern art, they also patronized writers such as Stefan George and were avid supporters of the Friedrich Hölderlin Society. Marianne and Wilhelm were close friends with the artists Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Erich Heckel, Emil Nolde, and Georg Kolbe, who executed the present bust of Marianne in 1930.
