Original tan cloth ruled in red, front cover lettered in black, red spine-label lettered in gilt (cloth spotted, boards bowing, some gatherings splitting but holding). Provenance: Ivan Boldizsar (presentation inscription to:) -- Matild Kornyei.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY BOLDIZSAR: 'For Matild Kornyei, with love and greetings, Christmas 1937'. IN A VARIANT BINDING with a printed ornament on the upper board rather than the usual woven pattern. 'A classic documentary project' (The Photobook). Boldizsar, novelist and screenwriter, was president of the Hungarian PEN Center, and one of the first people from a former Soviet bloc nation to receive an honorary degree in the United States. The Photobook, vol. I, p.140. With: Tiborc új arca, the work's continuation, published in 1955 with new portraits by Kalman and interviews by Boldizsar with survivors or their descendents. (2)
