Lot Essay

This work will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné of Cy Twombly--Works on Paper being prepared by Nicola Del Roscio.

The graphic language of Twombly remains at all times inimitable. This is undoubtedly because, in the final analysis, he owes nothing to anybody...Expressing nothing but himself, totally--that is the fluctuating rhythm, contradictory, secret and esoteric, of the creative act. Twombly's egocentric sincerity is the sun radiating from his work.
(P. Restany, The Revolution of the Sign, 1961 in N. Del Roscio, ed., Writings on Twombly, Munich, 2002).
