Lot Essay

Throughout his life, the sea always held a particular fascination for Lowry. His childhood holidays were spent at Lytham St Anne's, a resort on the Lancashire coast at Easter, and at Rhyl in North Wales in the summer. The present work shares the same subject matter as the only painting of her son's that Lowry's mother ever expressed a liking for, which depicts yachts at Lytham.
