Lot Essay

The Turkish Drawing Room was the most picturesque of Alexander II's appartments, conceived after a design by Monighetti. The room, in which the Emperor arranged a large collection of weapons from Egypt, Turkey and Persia was lavishly decorated in the Middle-eastern style with the fountain in the middle and verses from Koran painted on the doors and windows. For an illustration of the watercolour by P. de Steinmüller, circa 1860, see:
I. P. Sautov, E. Ducamp et., Imperial Palaces in the vicinity of St. Petersburg, Tsarskoe Selo, Watercolours, paintings and engravings from the 18-19th centuries, Paris, 1992, no. 28, pp. 70-71 illustrated.
Wolf notes A. Morozov as an excellent colourist. See N. B. von Wolf, Imperial Porcelain Factory, 1744-1904, St. Petersburg, 2003, p. 237.
