Lot Essay

Although published by Butlin and Joll (op. cit.), the attribution of the present work to Turner has not gained universal support in recent times. Butlin and Joll link it to a group of group of sketches on paper and card which also came from the Arran collection and most of which are now at the Yale Center for British Art. They note that these are no longer accepted as autograph by most Turner scholars.
