Lot Essay

According to Barbara Zinkant, Souza's wife at the time: "The drawings were really quick sketches, done when we were having tea with my sister who lived and worked in Stratford-Upon-Avon. While there, I remember he [Souza] made the comment that Shakespeare seems to have lived or worked in every old house in this town. Francis had a tremendous gift for these very clean line drawings. Watching him, I was always amazed at how quickly and effortlessly he worked. (Correspondence, 30 March 2009)
