Lot Essay

Norfolk photographs the lush, tropical landscape of Ascension Island, a British colony in the South Atlantic. The island is thought to be the epicentre of the UK/US surveillance programme, Echelon, a global, computerised electronic system, hidden from sight to the world. Knowing the location of this mystical image, taken along the footpath to the top of Green Mountain, therefore begs the question of what could be hidden in these mist-shrouded trees. Norfolk is the 2004 recipient of ICP's Infinity Award for Photojournalism and his work is held in numerous collections, including The Getty Museum, Los Angeles and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Number 10 from the sold-out edition of 10.
