Lot Essay

In Imagine Finding Me -- a series of snapshot-sized double self-portraits -- Otsuka explores themes of belonging, identity and memory. Using digital manipulation, she becomes 'a tourist of [her] own history', re-visiting places from her childhood and finding her younger self. She created the present composite image by digitally inserting a carefully staged self-portrait executed in 2005 into a snapshot of herself taken in 1976. The accompanying text is an entry from the diary she kept throughout her photographic time travels. London-based Otsuka is a visual artist and writer, who published her first autobiographical book in Japan at the age of 15 to much acclaim. She earned an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art in 1997 and her work is held in various collections, including Huis Marseille Museum for Photography, Amsterdam, and the Wilson Centre for Photography, London.
