Lot Essay

For Underground (1998-2000), Hatakeyama photographed the
underground waterways of Shibuya in Tokyo. Of the series, he comments: 'The things of the underground world exist within perfect darkness,
oblivious to the light and sense of vision of the world above the
ground.' (Naoya Hatakeyama, Tankosha, 2002, p.iii)
