Lot Essay

This photo booth self-portrait is unique and the Jersey Heritage Collection does not hold any other similar photo booth portraits.

The star brooch worn in this self-portrait would not have been an accident; it draws strong associations to the Jewish star used by the Nazis to identify Jews. Cahun appears to be in her 40s in this portrait at which time she would have been living in Jersey, where she settled after persecution by the Nazis for being part of the Resistance.
