Lot Essay

To be included in the forthcoming Antonio Saura Catalogue Raisonné being prepared by the Succession Saura and Olivier Weber-Caflisch.

"The female body that has been present in most of my pictures and drawings since 1954, of ten reduced to its most elementary form and subject to all kinds of teratological treatment provides above all a structural support for action, so that you don't get lost, so that you are not submerged in uncontrolled pictorial activity in which chaos and excess negate affirmation..."

(Saura in conversation with Olivier Weber-Caflisch, reproduced in O. Weber-Caflisch, Multitudes, Accumulations, Repetitions, Mutations....A Detached Vision, in Saura: Multitudes, Navarre 2004, p. 25).
