This composition is based on Jan Breughel the Elder's Dorfstrasse mit Kanal, on loan to the National Gallery of Art, Washington (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere. Die Gemälde, DuMont, 1979, p. 216, fig. 266).
