Lot Essay

A similar subject is engraved and illustrated in Hugh Phillips, The Thames about 1750, London, 1951, p. 171, fig. 194. The bell under the roof of the toll-house was put up in 1730, so that toll collectors could ring for assistance when attacked by highwaymen, or unruly travellers.
