Lot Essay

The composition of the three figures relates closely to the Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist under an apple tree, datable to circa 1535, in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe. A similar canopy is employed in the Virgin and Child before a curtain held by two Angels, datable to circa 1520, in the Mauritshuis, The Hague. We are grateful to Dr. Dieter Koepplin for confirming that this is by 'a good pupil or workshop of Cranach, c. 1525'.
