Lot Essay

Dawn Chorus - 7, part of Jitish Kallat's Dawn Chorus series, reflects the socio-economic disparities in Mumbai. The big, bright smiles of the four boys fill this vibrant painting with life. Kallat brushes over this work with a sense of irony as he depicts Mumbai's young street peddlers and domestic workers as carefree youth. Superimposed on the boy's hair, the tightly-packed cityscapes symbolize the physical and psychological burdens forced on them by the tumultuous nature of the bustling metropolis.
