Lot Essay

Both Benedict Nicolson and Leonard Slatkes support the assumption that Terbrugghen and Van Baburen shared a studio between 1622 and 1624 and that the present lot was executed in this workshop, by a pupil who looked carefully at the oeuvre of both masters (see op. cit., 2007, p. 235). Nicolson assembled this painting together with a handful of other works under the name 'Master B' and believes this figure to be one of the stock characters used by the studio.
