Lot Essay

Carel de Moor was considered one of the most important Dutch portrait painters of the late 17th and early 18th Century. In his early career he also produced genre pictures in which he conformed closely to the Leiden fine painters of the preceding generation, as can be seen in the present lot. De Moor studied, amongst others, with Gerrit Dou and Frans van Mieris. Around 1694 he founded the 'Leidsche Tekenakademie' together with Willem van Mieris and Jacob van Toorenvliet. In 1714 he was knighted by Emperor Charles VI.
