Lot Essay

The present composition is also often referred to as the 'Ill-matched couple' due to the age differences between the man and woman. Jordaens and his studio treated this subject on several occasions. Two autograph works are known; one in the Liechtenstein collection, Vienna; the other with Sotheby's, New York, 29 January 2009, lot 15. Another studio work was sold in the Mauerbach Auction, Christie's, Vienna, 29 October 1996, lot 72.
