Lot Essay

The present composition is based on a marine by Willem van de Velde II (whereabouts unknown). An attribution to Hendrik Jacobsz. Dubbels (Amsterdam 1621-1707), who is known to have copied seascapes from several successful colleagues, has been suggested by Dr. Gerlinde de Beer (written communication, 20 August, 2009).
