Lot Essay

Professor Sumowski dates the picture to the beginning of the 1670s and compares it to other works from this period such as the 'Doctor's Visit' in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. He further states that the gentleman in the present work could be a self-portrait since it is comparable to a self-portrait in van Hoogstraten's painting De muntmeesters en waardijns van de Munt van Holland te Dordrecht in the Dordrechts Museum, Dordrecht.
