Lot Essay

Dayroush Gharahzad focuses on women in the streets of Tehran. They are required to cover their heads and wear modest clothes in public and instead tend to wear a lot of makeup as a means of expression.
His streets are scenes of alienation and disconnection. In this work the woman, seen in profile, looks to the end of the picture, avoiding the viewer's gaze. Meanwhile, the graffitied male face on the wall stares straight ahead at the viewer, albeit through the lenses of dark glasses. Thus different levels or reality, connection and voyeurism are explored.
