Lot Essay

With A. Lange Söhne Proof of Origin dated 17 January 2005 confirming delivery of the watch to an official retailer of Lange Uhren GmbH, setting pin, operating instructions, copy of Wempe servicing invoice, original fitted black presentation box and outer packaging.

The 1815 Moonphase model was created to celebrate Emil Lange's 150th birthday in 1999, paying tribute to one of the most illustrious sons of Saxony's watchmaking dynasty. The second son of founder Adolph Lange, Emil Lange was at the helm of the company for over 40 years beginning in 1875, first with his brother Richard, as of 1887 on his own.

During the era of Emil Lange, the firm gained the highest international honours and worldwide fame. He continued his father Adolph's social commitment and actively mentored up-and-coming watchmakers in Glashütte.

The Lange 1815 MOONPHASE, a paragon of modern watchmaking, was made in a limited series of 150 examples in platinum and 250 in pink gold, produced between 1999 and 2000.

Seven gold appliques represent the Big Dipper constellation, one of the most distinctive asterisms in the sky. Mizar and Alcor are portrayed in the middle of the Big Dipper's handle. Since Alcor is so small, the ability to distinguish the two stars was held as a measure of good vision in medieval times.

The moon position is automatically adjusted twice a day and will deviate from the moon's actual orbit by only one day after 386'435 days or 1058 years of uninterrupted operation.
