Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin dated 9 September 2004, spare plain platinum snap on back numbered 4'260'902, white gold and wooden setting pin, Authorised Service Center tag, wooden presentation box and outer packaging. Furthermore delivered with Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial, white gold indexes and calendar in English in 2004 and its subsequent sale on 19 July 2004.

Never offered at auction before, the present reference 3940 in platinum is believed to be the only example of this model fitted with a glazed display snap on back to appear in public to date. Reference 3940, in production from 1985 until 2006, was available in yellow, pink and white gold and platinum. The rarest version, the platinum models, were delivered with the plain snap on back only whereas the other case versions were available with both solid and glazed back. Consequently, the present example in platinum must be considered a prime example for the demanding collector as it comes with a desirable feature that no other ref. 3940 in platinum can offer.

The watch has lately been serviced in the workshops of Patek Philippe and is preserved in like new overall condition, still retaining the protective International Customer Service label to the plain snap on back.

Reference 3940 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 292-293.
