MARK OF ASPREY, LONDON, 1959, 9CT
The tapering bowl engraved on one side with the Royal arms impaling the Royal arms of Greece, below a Royal duchess' coronet, engraved on the other side with a coat-of-arms and an inscription, on pedestal foot with spreading base, marked under foot, the foot further stamped 'ASPREY and BIRCH & GAYDON LTD.'

The first arms are those of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (1906-1968).

The second arms are those of the City of London.

The inscription reads 'Presented by THE CORPORATION OF LONDON To H.R.H. THE DUCHESS OF KENT on the occasion of the opening of LONDON WALL on the 7th July 1959'

Lot Essay

The Duchess of Kent was driven along the new road which then stretched from Aldersgate to Moorgate. With a parasol protecting her from the sun she was accompanied by the Lord Mayor in ceremonial robes in an open-topped Land Rover.
