Lot Essay

Vanessa Bell posed for Grant at 8 Fitzroy Square, London, but the landscape glimpsed in this painting is the Alpes Maritimes near their cottage near Cassis.

The present work appears in the background of a portrait of the previous owner and novelist, Sir Hugh Walpole (1884-1941), painted by Stephen Bone and in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.

We are very grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
