Lot Essay

Joseph Cribb was Eric Gill's first apprentice, working with him in Ditchling in East Sussex between 1906 and 1913. Cribb continued to work as Gill's assistant until the latter's death in 1940. The present owner's grandfather worked alongside Joseph Cribb for short periods in his workshop at Ditchling.
