Lot Essay

Patrick Bourne comments, 'By the early 1940s Redpath's work had become manifestly professional. From an early age she had accepted the necessity of unremitting hard work as a precondition of artistic achievement. Kim Redpath describes her attention to technique as "a loving process" ... Redpath's freedom with paint was almost culinary, imbued with a sense of experiment and discovery and relishing the accident of invention' (see Anne Redpath 1895-1965, Edinburgh, 1989, p. 28).
