Lot Essay

"In 1991 I made a small work that used a fragment, a splinter, from another artist's work. This wasn't appropriation. It was theft. I framed the splinter... from the old Spanish door in Marcel Duchamp's Étant Donnés, his installation in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The splinter will not be missed. It is tiny and the door is very ragged." - Tom Marioni
