Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1978
Rhône. Domaine-bottled: Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Bin-soiled, some loose and four very damp-stained labels. Levels 1.5 cms. below base of capsules or better. In Christie's carton
Tasting Note: Opaque plum/garnet-coloured, with a fabulously sweet, youthful bouquet of liquorice, incense, smoked meats, pepper, and blackberry/cassis fruit, the full-bodied 1978 La Chapelle is extremely young with astonishing vigour, velvety tannin, and a full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered personality. The finish lasts for over 60 seconds. Remarkably fresh and not yet fully mature, the super-concentrated 1978 should continue to age well for another three decades. Robert Parker. Wine Advocate 129 (June 2000)
