Lot Essay

cf. Les Lalanne, exhibition catalogue, Centre National d'Art Contemporain, 5 June - 13 July 1975, Paris, 1975, pp. 22 and 62.
Exhibition catalogue, Claude & François-Xavier Lalanne, New York, Paul Kasmin Gallery, 2007, pp. 11 and 110.

These 'Oiseaux de Marbre' chair and the table in the following lot were conceived in the summer of 1974, in Athens, at the request of Alexandre Iolas, the Lalannes' art dealer.
The pieces were made in the Manolis Karentinos workshop. The large model was first exhibited at the Centre National d'Art et de Culture (CNAC) in June 1975. The initial edition of twelve examples of each of the five models was not completed. Only the small and large model were executed. A second set of five armchairs - three large and two small - was made for Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. The third set is with Claude Lalanne. It is possible that twelve other chairs exist, but their whereabouts are unknown.
