Dated fourth month, renwu year (1922)

NOTE:
This painting was made in 1922. Qi Baishi employed different tones of black ink to convey brightness and darkness. He mastered the precise gradations of light and shadow. Lush forests and dark green mountains, with a light wash, the rain scenery of this piece became dimly discernible, calm and serene. An inscribed seven-character verse written by Qi expressed his self-confidence and profound realization of artistic innovation. This picture was in the collection of Dr. Alfred E. Mirsky and was auctioned by Christie's in Hong Kong on May 29, 2006 (Lot 725) for the benefit of the Graduate Student Program of the Rockefeller University.
