Dedicated to Jianhou
Accompanied by a letter 28.6 x 20.3 cm. (11 1/4 x 8 in.) written by Xu Beihong.

NOTE:
This painting was a gift given by Xu Beihong to his student Jianhou before Jianhou left for Guilin to take up a teaching position. Xu later mentions in the letter to his friend Jiemin his continued care and hopes for Jianhou as a teacher as well as an artist, fully reflecting Xu's ideals towards art and art education.
Yang Jianhou (1910-1993) was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu province and was an artist who excelled in traditional and oil painting, while teaching the arts. In 1930 he enrolled in the art department at the National Central University, and held numerous solo exhibitions in the 40's. Yang taught at the Zhongqing, Guangxi, Jinling and Nanjing National Art Institutes, and sat as an executive member of the Jiangsu Art Institute Council. (2)
