Full plate gilt brass verge movement, fusée, pierced and engraved cock and balance, three arm balance, plain gilt brass dial, outer ring with 12 removable numerals, inner ring with 24 segments, single hand, outer rectangular case with engraved floral motif to the center back and corner, twisted chord handle

Lot Essay

What is interesting to note is that the numerals are removable to this Japanese verge watch. The numerals can be changed with each season to divide the time from sunrise to sunset into 12 equal hours. This interesting device displayed how the hours varied between diurnal and nocturnal time.
