Lot Essay

Edward Prior (c. 1800-1868) was a reputed watch and clock maker in London. His designs are known as being targeted for the Turkish market as evidenced by his use of multiple cases, a feature which was popular in Turkey at the time. Prior also constructed a long-case clock which is housed in the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque), Istanbul. Further discussion can be read in Britten's Old Clocks & Watches and Their Makers (8th Ed.), p. 470.
