Lot Essay

The present example exhibits the stylized marine imagery employed by Tiffany for the Goelet Cup yachting trophies of the late 19th century. One example is in the collection of the New York Yacht Club, dated 1886, and illustrated in Charles H. Carpenter, Jr., Tiffany Silver, 1997, p. 151, fig. 241. Another, dated 1894, sold Christie's, New York, 20-21 January 2005, lot 75.
