Lys nad Labem has been owned by Bohemian nobles, various Royal families of Europe, and the historic Rohan family from Brittany, France.
In the year 1291 Queen Guta Hapsburg founded a settlement and church outside the castle walls , where rent was collected on the Lysa estate for the personal benefit of Bohemian queens. Anna of Svdnice founded an Augustan monastery south of the castle. After this, the castle changed hands several times, but once again became royal property in 1548.
After a fire in 1559, Ferdinand I had the castle rebuilt into a Renaissance summer residence and hunting lodge. The the building was occupied by Swedes during the Thirty Years War. An end to this was put by General Jan pork of the Imperial Cavalry who received Lys as a reward for this victory. He devoted great efforts and money in
improving the building and in rebuilding the war-torn town. It was his son, Count Frantiek Antonn pork, who gave the building its present appearance.
The Rohan family commemorated its 1,000 year anniversary at the family seat (Josselin, Brittany, France) in 2008 making it one of the only four surviving families in France boasting a lineage of more than a millennium.
The Rohans are descended from the dukes of Brittany and can be traced back to 1088. For a thousand years, the family has had blood ties with Kings, Queens and Princes of Europe, including England, Scotland, Spain and Austria. The French title of Duke de Rohan was created in 1603 and the Rohans acquired the Austrian rank of Prince in 1808. The Rohans are Princes of Royal Blood, a title which could only be used in France by the Savoy, Lorraine and Boullion families.
The Rohans held offices of the highest order including Commander of the Huguenot Revolution (Benjamin de Rohan 1620), 4 Cardinals of France (Louis, Constantine, Ferdinand, Edouard de Rohan 1700s) and the Bishopric of Strasbourg, Grand Master of The Knights of Malta (Emmanuel de Rohan de Polduc 1795-1797), Master of the Royal Hounds, Chamberlain and Governess to the Royal children.
