Lot Essay

Bay Middleton was the winner of both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby in 1836, ridden by the great jockey James Robinson, who had previously ridden five Derby winners. Bay Middleton was a hard horse to ride and the Earl of Jersey initially had to work hard to persuade James Robinson to try him. When his racing career came to an end, Bay Middleton was put to stud, being named Leading Sire in both 1844 and 1849. He died in 1857 and was buried near his stall door.
